Availability - Your best bet is online - you won't find these at most electronic chains.
Dim lit recording enviornment
- Your probably better off using an alarm clock camera that records in black and white if you are monitoring in a dimly lit enviornment. The models we've seen such as the wireless IP hidden clock camera, can record in fairly dark situations and is rated at .05 lux ( night time with quarter moon), when recording in B/W. If you want color monitoring be prepared to have more ambient lighting as the same camera may be rated higher - .5 lux ( night time with full moon) for color recording. You'll need a bit more light. Keep in mind...the lower the lux rating the less light is needed for quality images - better in dark situations.
Video vs Audio - Many covert alarm clock cameras are only good for capturing video not audio.... If you need to capture audio, make sure the model states this feature in the product features - don't assume it will capture audio.
Alarm clock camera placement - These cameras typically view at about 90 degrees as the lense is pointing from the side so if you want to capture the entire room, you would place the camera at about table level for optimal results.
Image Quality - For motion video, anything over 20 FPS (frames per second) is adequate. Below 20 FPS will produce jerky movement. A Frame Rate - FPS over 30 is not discernable to the human eye.
Video or still shot? - Many cameras offer a high resolution "still shot" option rather than continuous video - capturing an image every 5 or 10 seconds instead of continuous video. This saves bandwidth as it takes less resources to capture a still image. For many covert monitoring applications, recording only at timed intervals is adequate.
The basic difference between hidden IP and hidden non IP cameras (stand alone) is that the IP camera allows real time viewing, and the stand alone varieties allow viewing only after the fact.
If you purchase a wireless IP hidden clock camera you will be able to either login to a designated web site to view what your camera is seeing, or simply type the IP address of your camera into any browser connected to the internet to view what your camera is seeing - as events occur. Images and video are uploaded to the internet using Wireless-G (802.11g) networking along with your WIFI router; the camera itself acts as a web server. If you need continuous recording and remote viewing "in real time"... that means "live", you definitely need a wireless IP covert camera rather than a non IP camera. Take a look - wireless IP hidden clock camera.
Non IP wireless spy cameras, or stand alone wireless clock cameras record images and video right to the unit itself - all video stays in the camera until you are ready for playback - Non IP covert clock cameras offer two options for playback. Playback Option 1 - The recorded images can usually be played on your TV by simply connecting the camera to the TV via an RCA cable.
Playback option 2 - The recorded images are captured onto an SD card inside the unit which can be removed and played on any DVR player or computer. SD cards typically hold between 512MB -1GB.
Keep in mind, 1GB will yield about 2.5 hours of motion video playback.
We've seen IP and stand alone spy clock radio cameras advertised online for between $46-$500.
