These are perfect for your more "discreet spying" needs as these spy cams are disguised as common everyday items. Boom boxes, clocks, plants, coffee mugs, air ionizers just about anything...Of course the key to capturing discreet video is to have these items well placed yet blending with their enviornment as to not cause any attention. There are 2 basic technologies regarding spy camera operation, stand alone, and wireless IP.
Wireless Hidden IP Spy Cameras
Wireless hidden IP cameras - These send video data directly over the internet. Very simply so you can watch whatever your camera is seeing by simply typing the IP address of the camera into any internet browser. This is basically how 99% of these IP cameras work:
You'll need the following equipment: the camera, computer, WIFI router and an ethernet cable. You also need the software disk that came with the camera.
You connect the camera to the router with the ethernet cable, this enables your router to recognize the IP address of the camera. You then load the software on your PC or laptop. From there you'll walk through the process of configuring the camera with your preferences.
Once configured you no longer need the ethernet connection from the camera to the router...the IP camera is acting as a web server.
To view activity within the camera range in real time, you simply type in the IP address of your camera (something like 74.298.29.105). There you go...live video.
The only drawback with IP cameras is storage. If you want to save video footage you may want to invest in a something like a 250 GB DVR storage device that records all video when in record mode, if you need it. Other wise you'll need to fill your computers hard drive which may not be practical long term.
Cost? It varies but expect to pay between $200-$600, for the variety of covert IP spy cameras on the market.
Stand Alone Wireless Spy Cameras
Stand alone covert spy devices record directly to an SD card that can be played back on most computers or any DVR player. You can use an RCA jack to connect directly to a TV monitor to view playback.
Keep in mind...playback on these types of spy devices is limited to viewing after the fact, unlike a wireless web camera that uploads images immediately via a WIFI router, so you'll have to either use the SD card or hardwire to a TV to get the video footage.
Plan on getting about 4 hours of video on a 1GB SD card. That is...if you plan on running continuous video...
You may not need continuous video running to acheive your spy goals. You can set most of these spy devices to record only when there is motion in the room, or at a specified timed interval say 1 frame every 8 seconds. This allows the 1 GB SD card to be used much longer up to a week in some cases.
